DC gets the right to vote (well almost!)

DC gets the right to vote (well almost!)

Last week in the House of Representatives they voted to give Washington D.C. a vote in the House and increase the State of Utah’s representatives to 4 from 3. As many of you know D.C. is the capital of US. Some maybe wondering what is the significance of D.C. getting a House vote. Well currently D.C. is represented in the House of Representatives by Delegate Eleanor Holmes. She has limited voting rights within the House. Giving DC this vote is a big triumph. Its something that has been trying to get passed for years and years, but of course there lies an obstacle. President Bush has said he is going to veto the bill because it is unconstitutional to give DC a vote in the House of Representatives. Other opponents of the bill have said that next DC will be asking to have representation in the Senate. Well here’s where I stand on the issue.

DC has approximately a half million residents who are paying taxes like every other American, but doesn’t have anyone in the Senate or House of Representatives looking out for their interests. I think it is long overdue for them to have a vote in the House of Representatives and if they want representation in the Senate then they should get that too. They are Americans and it’s a shame that some people don’t want these half million of Americans to have fair representation. Once again President Bush is using the constitution to claim why he is against something. Well that excuse is a bunch of bull. When the constitution was written, it was only for rich white males. Why are people still in this day and age pretending like the constitution can’t be changed. Times have changed a great deal since when it was written. For people to try and use the excuse that is lame, and they are taking the easy way out. Blacks and women didn’t have any rights when it was written, but America eventually righted that wrong. The constitution can and should be amended from time to time. That’s why we already have over twenty amendments to it now. I encourage the Senate to pass this bill and for President Bush to sign the bill into law.

Why I was on my hiatus due to tax season many things have been happening. Don Imus was fired for his outlandish comments and the Virginia Tech massacre occurred. I was going to write my opinions on both, but I am going to keep it short and simple.

After listening to everyone state their opinion about the Imus I have to say that I am happy that he was fired. He needs to take responsibility for what he said. It was stupid and he should have been fired. Originally I didn’t think he should have been fired, but after hearing him blame it on hip hop artists I knew this guy was a joke. He has issues and if he really things people believe that he listens to hip hop music then he is crazy. Hip hop music shouldn’t be blamed for his derogatory comments and people need to quite trying to blame it on them.

Virginia Tech massacre was very shocking. I heard about it on my flight back home after a weekend in North Carolina. It is a sad and very unfortunate event. I will continue to keep the Virginia Tech family in my prayers. I have a friend that says that the school should be at fault for what happened, but I disagree. I am sure no one could have imagined the guy coming back to school and killing more people. It’s a very unfortunate event and we need to rally around the school and not look for someone to blame.

I am America’s Nightmare…
